Losing My Mind to Shirley Murdock

I think all women have at least one song, old or new, that when they hear it, they stop everything they are doing, grab the nearest hairbrush, ink pen or spoon to act as a microphone to go through the full emotions of singing every lyric of the song just as the artist did (or close enough), one of mine is As We Lay by Shirley Murdock.

Late one boring sleepless night, I'm online looking for 80's tunes to put a smile of my face when I found this classic ballad. Time stopped for about 6 minutes as I near became Shirley belting out, as far as I could strain my mere voice, singing about an elicit affair. I mean, I got up at one point to go through full body motions to make my point across

"...we should have counted up the costs, but instead we got lost,
in the second, in the minute, in the hour, hey, hey, hey! As we
lay"

By the time I was through, I had a daggone headache. But oh, sweet memories.

Songs to Give a Lapdance/Striptease To

(and yes some of them I have tried)

Come Around-M.I.A.
If you've ever heard it, you'd probably be able to visualize it. It has that Indian groove mixed with the Timberland beat. Perfect for hip swiveling.

3 More Days- Ray LaMontagne
Lord! If you haven't heard this one, try iTunes. Here is a dusty-butt looking white dude with a soulful sanging voice singing bout 3 more days til he comes home to ya and with lyrics like "wanna give it til you can't say no" and how he's gonna "get this good job done" makes me wanna peel my shirt off right now!

It's a Man's World- James Brown
Sensual and at just the right tempo for slowing removing layers of your clothes. This one is easy for reminding him why this man's world wouldn't be nuthin' without a woman.

Nasty, Naughty Boy- Christina Aguilera
This one has the big band, bad girl vibe as Xtina has her way with the boy in question. You'd wanna have your way with yours with this tune.

Here I Go Again On My Own- Whitesnake
Ok, yeah, not exactly sexy but simply because of the video of Tawny Kitaen sprawling herself out on her dudes car, everytime I hear this song, I wanna throw inhibitions to the wind and sprawl my ass all over the place and hop on a table somewhere. I know I'm not alone.

Sexual Healing- Marvin Gaye
Who doesn't wanna take their clothes off when they hear that "baaaaaaby, I'm hot just like an oven". Who doesn't?

Nasty Girls- Vanity
Another given.

Pussycat- Missy Elliot
The explicit lyrics say it all: P_ssy don't fail me now, I gotta turn this n___ out, so he don't want nobody else, but me and only me. The ladies would know what I'm talking 'bout.

Love to Love You Baby- Donna Summer
Ok, Donna's cooing and ahhhing will have you stripping butt naked and probably laid out on the floor somewhere. Dangerous. Use at your discretion.

Adore and Darling Nikki- Prince
What would a sexy list be without him.

Turn Off The Lights- Teddy Pendergrass
Speaks for itself.

What Ever Happened to Another Bad Creation?

So back in 1991, Another Bad Creation, also known as ABC, 7 little, little boys had a single called "Iesha" they used to get airplay on the Jukebox network. And it was my jam. I recall the lyrics went:

We played Nintendo,

This was her very first date

I didn't wanna make it seem
to fly

We ate cereal

She couldn't stay out at late

Her mother told her to be home
at nine

They also had another song called "Jealous Girl" and "At the Playground" and while no one really took them seriously, we liked the songs anyway. It was fun. According to Wikipedia, they attepted two comeback albums in 1996 and 2006 with no success. Oh well. We'll always have memories.

I used to love the end: "Go Ro-Ro, Go Ro-Ro" "Yeah boy!"

Favorite Girl Groups of All Time

SWV

Ahhhh high school. "Im So Into You" hit the radio and that was it. It became of of my favorite songs along with "Downtown" and "Weak" (and don't you know every girl in my school was trying to sing Weak a -capella, including me.) They had nothing but hits for years and I ate up every song they put out. Was so sad when I heard funny-looking Coko decided to go solo and leave her girls behind. I have heard, however, that they are looking to make a comeback. It would be welcomed. Favorite song is probably "Weak" followed by the "Anything" Remix.

Destiny's Child

Couldn't really have a girl group list without them. I was pumping my first to their female-empowered songs from "Bills, Bills, Bills" to "Survivor". Call them what you may but they have provided more hits than most. Favorites include "Say My Name", "Bootylicious" and maybe "Emotions". Honorable mention their "Amazing Grace" which I still sing in the shower.

Salt-n-Pepa

I remember not really liking rap in the '80s, til Salt-n-Pepa hit the scene and made what I consider rap for girls. It was then my mission to learn every dance from every one of their videos and of course the lyrics to their songs so I could keep up with my big sister. Favorite song is still "Shake Yo Thang" with EU.

En Vogue

I think En Vogue shouls take credit for bringing some class back to girl groups in the early '90s. They made their mark with "Hold On" and everybody and their momma was a fan. They also brought back real harmonies ang real singing. Favorite tune: "Giving Him Something He Can Feel"

TLC

*sigh* In high school, these women were my idols!!!! I loved them so much. From the day I heard "Aint Too Proud to Beg", say T-Boz's lil short, blond do, heard Lefteye's rap with the condom over her eye and heard Chilli's hooks in her baggy pants, I was hooked. They did no wrong in my book and I worshipped them. They were the reigning queens as most successful girl group in their time and I so miss their music. Favorites include "Creep", "Waterfalls", "What About Your Friends" and "Aint Too Proud to Beg". And I so miss my Lefteye.

The Supremes

The queens! The epitome girl group who started it off. None of the girl groups listed would have been anywhere if it weren't for The Supremes. Seriously, it all started with them. The costumes, the hair and going solo and leaving the rest behind, yes Ms. Ross started it all. Faves include "Where Did Our Love Go", "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and "Baby Love"

Songs That Made Me Cry

One Last Cry- Brian McKnight
One of my favorite breakup songs, I listened to this one after a major breakup years ago. Helps get those tears a-flowin'.

Circle of Life - The Lion King
Ok, yeah, I am silly but something about this song, I find so damn uplifting is brings me to tears. Don't know if its the African drums or lyrics or the words but it overwhelms me everytime I hear it.

How Do I Say Goodbye to Yesterday -Boy II Men
Standard. Needs to explanation, actually.

Oooh Child - Chi Lites
I first heard this on Crooklyn. I believe after the mother died of cancer. I think this has made most people cry.

Better Days - Dianne Reeves
The story of Reeves grandmother. Great '80's song.

Stranger in Moscow -Michael Jackson
Most people aren't down with this song but I came across it in my murky days as a depressive teen. Used to listen to it endlessly on my Walkman and pretend I was the loneliest girl in the world.

Everybody Hurts- REM
Self-explanatory. Just a great peice of work. Love the video too. We all have our days.

The Wind- Mariah Carey
This song I think is about someone whose blown in the wind, as in being gone from your life. I used to listen to this at night and cry for no reason at all but to just feel.

New Discovery: Mark Ronson

Nip/Tuck, my favorite TV show and the only drama I watch nowadays kicked off its new season last Tuesday and as usual, I was fully involved with the storyline, particularly entranced by one scene in which Dr. Shawn McNamara is stabbed and lying, bleeding on the operating floor, blood filling his lungs, and spilling out of his mouth, gasping for air and trying to figure out how to save his own life. I thought....'Dang, what is that fly song they are playing in the background'.

After the show ended and they played the encore, I stayed tuned just to hear it again and quickly hit Google in search of if. It turned out to be a remake of The Smiths song Stop Me If You've Heard This Before (thanks B) by a producer I'd never heard of before, Mark Ronson and performed by another one I didn't know Daniel Merriweather (whose voice reminds me of a young, very fine D'Angelo *turn on*). Got on iTunes to hear more and have been smitten every since.

Ronson produces and remixes already released songs and new ones and I am tickled over this find (turns out he's the brother of DJ Samantha Ronson, Lindsay Lohan's chick). If you're in the mood for some new treats, I recommend checking out these other cool tunes by him:

  • Oh My God with Lily Allen

  • Here Comes the Fuzz with Freeway and Nikka Costa

  • Bout to Get Ugly with Rhymefest and Anthony Hamilton

  • Ooh Wee with Ghostface Killah and Nate Dogg

Watch the video here. Some hater wouldn't let me embed it off You Tube.

Solange vs. Beyonce

So someone mentioned Solange's new album a few months ago. I heard the first track "I Decided" and wasn't majorly impressed. I went about my business.

Meanwhile, big sis, Be came out with her Sasha Fierce album. Being a fan, I was all set to go pick it up, first day. Luckily, I got to hear it before buying it and was sadly disappointed. While I appreciate her trying something new, I couldn't find 3 solid tracks I liked (Single Ladies being my fave) and decided it wasn't worth buying.

Then I give Solange's album another try. Um, on second glance, I am really feeling it. Her songs are light, fresh and catchy. After viewing the following video last night, I couldn't get it out of my head. Could it be, that Solange's album is better than big sista B's?? Um yeah. And who'd thunk it?

I might even spend some money downloading here!
