Relax and Kick Back with Jazzanova

The day I discovered this amazing group and their music was one where I exhaled a deep sigh and an audible "Yesssss."

If I may, please let me introduce you to Jazzanova, a German-based group of musicians, whose ultra-chill sound can be perfectly summed up as  nu-jazz, electronica with funk, soul and Latin influences. I mean these are some gifted musicians with some artfully relaxing music.

Check them out for yourself. Here are a few of my top tracks:

Lucky Girl

I mean just gorgeous!! Warm vocals by Paul Randolph, with a cheerful and airy jazz flute and vibrant horns.

No Use

Laid back, rich and sensual, this could easily make a "quiet storm" or romantic playlist. It instantly sets the mood.

 Another New Day

Such smooth, varied and jazzy instrumentation. Has a thoughtful and introspective feel. Wait for that beat break at 2:33.

Theme from Belle Et Fou

Pure funk!!! But not dance funk; a more chill but uptempo piece. Sets the tone for a friendly get-together or dinner party.

You Know This Song: Do Your Thing / Estelle with Janelle Monae

So I'd heard this song a million times from TV commercials such as for TJ Maxx but while I subliminally filed it away, it never dawned on me to look it up. Because if I did, I would have been surprised to find its sung by none other than Estelle but the bigger surprise was finding out that unique-tress Janelle had dropped vocals on this cool, bouncy song.

How did I not pay attention to this??? Don't I feel silly??

Protest Songs for the Moment

Fight the Power / Public Enemy

Fight the power
We've got to fight the powers that be

Freedom / Beyonce with Kendrick Lamar

Freedom
Freedom
Where are you?
'Cause I need freedom too
I break chains all by myself
Won't let my freedom rot in hell
Hey! I'ma keep running
'Cause a winner don't quit on themselves

Respect / Aretha Franklin

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Find out what it means to me

My Petition / Jill Scott

You say that I'm wrong for
Stating my opinion to you
You say that I'm wrong and there'll be quiet consequences too
But I know my rights babe
There'll be no law abridging
The freedom of my speech
Or the right for me to petition for a remedy of grievances

Fortunate Son / Creedance Clearwater Revival

Some folks are born, silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, y'all
But when the taxman comes to the door
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yeah
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no, no
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no

Redemption Song / Bob Marley and the Wailers

Emancipate yourself from mental slavery

None but our self can free our minds

Have no fear for atomic energy

'Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look?
Some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fulfill de book

Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Redemption songs

Imagine / John Lennon

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

Don't Touch My Hair / Solange

They don't understand
What it means to me
Where we chose to go
Where we've been to know
They don't understand
What it means to me
Where we chose to go
Where we've been to know

What songs feeling at the moment?

SOTW: Georgia / Tiggs Da Author

This is one of those songs that make me frustrated with public radio because this is the kind of song I want to hear and should hear but seems to never play on common radio.

From the first sound of this unique voice, to the bells, and then the throwback beat drops, this track sounds like something special is happening. This one should grab you right away! Its a feel-good with a great sound mixing soul, a dash of reggae and a '60s beat but its the hook that will pull you in:

I say you got me singing G-G-G-G-G-G- (Georgia!)

So just who is this Tiggs?? He is a Tanzanian from South London honing his crafts in producing, singing and songwriting who aims to win a Grammy one day. I'll be looking out for that!
