Do's & Don'ts for Karoake + Some Classic Songs

Getting ready for a night of karaoke but feeling unsure of what to sing and how to get the crowd pumped or how not to make a fool out of yourself, read on.

Karaoke Do's

  • Choose really popular hit songs that everyone would know. Getting the crowd to sing along is key is key and people like hearing songs they know and like.
  • Dress up. Get into character. Plan to do a song in advance and bring part of the look with a hat, sunglasses, boa, whatever. Show that you nor only can perform the song but BE the performer!
  • Choose songs where you know most of the words. Nothing worst then getting up there and having to completely depend on the screen to get the lyrics. If you're staring at the screen, you're engaging with your audience.
  • Don't be afraid to gender bend. Nothing funnier than a due doing Taylor Swift or Britney Spears and nothing cooler than a women doing Jay Z or Eminem.
  • Know your crowd. If its the country music crowd, go with that. If its a hip hop crowd, that's you'r winner. If its an theater/artsy crowd, go with the show tunes. Knowing what crowd you're in should guide your song choices.
  • Don't be afraid to freestyle, change the lyrics to suit you or put your own spin or flavor to the song. Showcasing your personality is always a crowd pleaser.
  • Don't ever worry about making a fool out of yourself doing karaoke because as long as you are up there, singing a great song and have a blast, you can NEVER look like a fool!

Karaoke Don'ts

  • Unless its a major hit and you think the crowd will be open to it, avoid ballads or slow songs. They bring the mood and energy down. This is usually when people leave the dance area and go order another drink or hit the restroom for a break.
  • Avoid unpopular or lesser known songs. You want the crowd to join you, dance, sing along and cheer you on. Not take that time to check their Facebook or Instagram.
  • Avoid songs you now hardly know the words to, unless you have the confidence to flub or freestyle with ease.
