I think all women have at least one song, old or new, that when they hear it, they stop everything they are doing, grab the nearest hairbrush, ink pen or spoon to act as a microphone to go through the full emotions of singing every lyric of the song just as the artist did (or close enough), one of mine is As We Lay by Shirley Murdock.
Late one boring sleepless night, I'm online looking for 80's tunes to put a smile of my face when I found this classic ballad. Time stopped for about 6 minutes as I near became Shirley belting out, as far as I could strain my mere voice, singing about an elicit affair. I mean, I got up at one point to go through full body motions to make my point across
"...we should have counted up the costs, but instead we got lost,
in the second, in the minute, in the hour, hey, hey, hey! As we
lay"
By the time I was through, I had a daggone headache. But oh, sweet memories.

We played Nintendo,
This was her very first date
I didn't wanna make it seem

She couldn't stay out at late

SWV
Ahhhh high school. "Im So Into You" hit the radio and that was it. It became of of my favorite songs along with "Downtown" and "Weak" (and don't you know every girl in my school was trying to sing Weak a -capella, including me.) They had nothing but hits for years and I ate up every song they put out. Was so sad when I heard funny-looking Coko decided to go solo and leave her girls behind. I have heard, however, that they are looking to make a comeback. It would be welcomed. Favorite song is probably "Weak" followed by the "Anything" Remix.
Destiny's Child
Couldn't really have a girl group list without them. I was pumping my first to their female-empowered songs from "Bills, Bills, Bills" to "Survivor". Call them what you may but they have provided more hits than most. Favorites include "Say My Name", "Bootylicious" and maybe "Emotions". Honorable mention their "Amazing Grace" which I still sing in the shower.
Salt-n-Pepa
I remember not really liking rap in the '80s, til Salt-n-Pepa hit the scene and made what I consider rap for girls. It was then my mission to learn every dance from every one of their videos and of course the lyrics to their songs so I could keep up with my big sister. Favorite song is still "Shake Yo Thang" with EU.
En Vogue
I think En Vogue shouls take credit for bringing some class back to girl groups in the early '90s. They made their mark with "Hold On" and everybody and their momma was a fan. They also brought back real harmonies ang real singing. Favorite tune: "Giving Him Something He Can Feel"
TLC
*sigh* In high school, these women were my idols!!!! I loved them so much. From the day I heard "Aint Too Proud to Beg", say T-Boz's lil short, blond do, heard Lefteye's rap with the condom over her eye and heard Chilli's hooks in her baggy pants, I was hooked. They did no wrong in my book and I worshipped them. They were the reigning queens as most successful girl group in their time and I so miss their music. Favorites include "Creep", "Waterfalls", "What About Your Friends" and "Aint Too Proud to Beg". And I so miss my Lefteye.
The Supremes
The queens! The epitome girl group who started it off. None of the girl groups listed would have been anywhere if it weren't for The Supremes. Seriously, it all started with them. The costumes, the hair and going solo and leaving the rest behind, yes Ms. Ross started it all. Faves include "Where Did Our Love Go", "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and "Baby Love"
One Last Cry- Brian McKnight
One of my favorite breakup songs, I listened to this one after a major breakup years ago. Helps get those tears a-flowin'.
Circle of Life - The Lion King
Ok, yeah, I am silly but something about this song, I find so damn uplifting is brings me to tears. Don't know if its the African drums or lyrics or the words but it overwhelms me everytime I hear it.
How Do I Say Goodbye to Yesterday -Boy II Men
Standard. Needs to explanation, actually.
Oooh Child - Chi Lites
I first heard this on Crooklyn. I believe after the mother died of cancer. I think this has made most people cry.
Better Days - Dianne Reeves
The story of Reeves grandmother. Great '80's song.
Stranger in Moscow -Michael Jackson
Most people aren't down with this song but I came across it in my murky days as a depressive teen. Used to listen to it endlessly on my Walkman and pretend I was the loneliest girl in the world.
Everybody Hurts- REM
Self-explanatory. Just a great peice of work. Love the video too. We all have our days.
The Wind- Mariah Carey
This song I think is about someone whose blown in the wind, as in being gone from your life. I used to listen to this at night and cry for no reason at all but to just feel.

Watch the video here. Some hater wouldn't let me embed it off You Tube.

So someone mentioned Solange's new album a few months ago. I heard the first track "I Decided" and wasn't majorly impressed. I went about my business.
Meanwhile, big sis, Be came out with her Sasha Fierce album. Being a fan, I was all set to go pick it up, first day. Luckily, I got to hear it before buying it and was sadly disappointed. While I appreciate her trying something new, I couldn't find 3 solid tracks I liked (Single Ladies being my fave) and decided it wasn't worth buying.
Then I give Solange's album another try. Um, on second glance, I am really feeling it. Her songs are light, fresh and catchy. After viewing the following video last night, I couldn't get it out of my head. Could it be, that Solange's album is better than big sista B's?? Um yeah. And who'd thunk it?
I might even spend some money downloading here!

Call it what you want: nasty, stupid, reptitive, violent, ignorant, degrading, annoying, I don't care what you call it, I still love true Baltimore club and have since the very first mixes I heard in middle school in the early '90s.
Perhaps, its an acquired taste of mainly B-More natives but there is just nothing that comes close to those beats and basslines for me when it comes to dancing and anytime I hear it, no matter where I am, I cannot help but bumping my shoulders to the beat (and you're lucky if I don't drop down and get a full eagle on!).
Ever since high school, when I wasn't old enough to get into the clubs, I relied on 92.Q's 9 o'clock mix with DJ's Boobie, Miss Tony and K Swift to bring me the latest beats. Me and my best friend at the time would practice our dance moves (for when we could actually get into the clubs) or for the opportunities to inpress our friends in school. It was just a great love for me. And though I'm getting much older and out of the actual club scene these days, I still love and appreciate the genre and hope it stays strong and grows.
My old favorites are The Perculator, Doo Doo Brown, Get Ya Guns Out, Shake That Ass Girl, Charlie Brown, The Drill Company, Zulu and so many more I can't even name. I actually made a list once in high school and got up to over 100 club song titles.
I hope it never dies but gains more respect in time.
RIP DJ K Swift, a favorite of mine since high school.
